Before anything else, your identity begins with this unshakable truth: You were created by God on purpose and for a purpose.
You are not an accident or afterthought.
In the opening chapters of the Bible, we are introduced to the awe-inspiring truth that humanity is created in the image of God. Genesis 1:27 states, “So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” This truth carries profound implications for how we see ourselves and others, and even how we relate to our Creator.
To be made in the image of God is not just a theological concept; it is the very foundation of our identity, purpose, and value.
Being made in God’s image means you can reflect aspects of His character—dignity, creativity, emotion, reason, and spiritual capacity. That truth gives every human life value, including yours.
How does Genesis 1:27 shape the way you think about human dignity and value? How does it influence the way you treat others, especially those who are marginalized and overlooked?
The term imago Dei—Latin for “image of God”—is a foundational concept for what it means to be human. It points to the truth that humanity, both male and female, was uniquely designed to mirror God’s nature in a way that no other part of creation was.
This truth sets us apart from the rest of the natural world. While animals and plants display God’s creativity, humanity uniquely reflects His character, will, and love.
Though we are not divine in the way God is, we bear His likeness in our rationality, creativity, morality, and relational capacity. When we grasp this truth—that we are made in God’s image—we find a deep sense of belonging and purpose.
We are not accidents.
We are not defined by the world’s standards.
Through Jesus, our identity as image bearers is restored because Jesus reconciles us to God. Christ enables us to reflect God’s image in the fullest way. As new creations in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17), we are empowered to live out our identity as His beloved children.
