When Getting Dressed Becomes Worship

When I was growing up, my older cousins April and Rachel were the the very definition of wonderful. If they did it, I wanted to do it; if they said it, I wanted to say it. If they wore it, I certainly wanted to wear it.

This is why my heart would soar at the sight of a trash bag full of clothes. Whenever my aunt cleaned out their closets, she’d give me April and Rachel’s glorious hand-me-downs. Each time, my greedy little fingers wriggled with anticipation as I ripped into the bag of treasures, delightedly trying on the item, and feeling my own awesomeness rise.

New clothes are best when they’re the old clothes of someone you admire.

The truth is, enjoying those clothes wasn’t greed. I actually think it was love.

I had the joy of filling my closet with garments that once covered two of my favorite people on the planet, and when I wore those clothes, I felt closer to them and more like them. What more can a girl ask for?

Now, imagine this: You know the Lord more and more through His Word, and the better acquainted you become with His story, the more you grasp that He is actually, truly, the epitome of awesomeness.

No one is dressed like Him.

You not only know Him, but you love Him and enjoy Him—and you realize His closet is the only one from which you want to borrow. His hand-me-downs are the ultimate honor.

You want to reflect His light, to enjoy His strength lent to you, to walk with dignity and compassion and wisdom that makes it easier for others to believe He’s real.

With a mind clothed with truth, won’t it be so much easier to overcome the accusations of pants that no longer zip? Won’t it be so much more natural to get dressed in the morning in the good lighting of God’s Word?

I wonder if you can picture it—not so much the portrait God inspired the biblical writers to paint through their words but the truer thing behind their word pictures.

The God of everything, who created everything, is clothed with honor and glory, is wrapped in light, robed with strength, yet uses His covering to extend compassion.

In all things, He imparts wisdom, and nothing stretches beyond the hem of His robe. What if every time we’ve longed to be beautifully dressed, it was actually a call to worship? To fix our gaze on the most glorious clothing of all?

I wonder if you can practice it—basking in the good lighting of God’s Word, asking God who He is over and over again and enjoying the answers.

God’s truth can beam into every moment, into every badly lit fitting room, into every closet.

Our brains are often like sieves, leaking out truth like pasta water, but maybe every day you can catch a new drop, catch a glimpse of the hem of His robe.

It matters, because where we look has a tremendous impact on our formation. We are shaped by what we see. We are transformed by what we take in.

Together, let’s look at the Lord by looking at His story, and as we do, we can know that even something as seemingly silly as getting dressed is not outside of His wisdom and our worship.

A Blessing

When every angle reflects only self
And dull despair sits atop every shelf,
The mirror you peer in’s not the right place
To see what is true, to show the right face

See God cloaked in light, robed with compassion,
Clothed in strength, honor—no one can match Him

Open His Word and you’ll learn what He’s like
Soak up His wisdom and take in His might

Beholding Him brings change, inside then out
Seeing Him transforms what you care about

When you long to be beautifully clothed,
It’s really a call to be still and know
The Creator (and How He’s Clothed)

Know Him, who’s dressed in glorious splendor
Place His glory at everything’s center.
